Real Training Objectives
Published by Niall Devitt, Btb Business Training
Usually when I talk to clients who are looking for a training solution for their employees, one of the first things that I need to do is to get the client to decide and agree on the training objectives and to have them evaluate how realistic these objectives are in relation to both their budgets and time scales.

There are three basic strategies that any training solution can take.
A Short-Term General Business Programme
Examples: Basic Selling Skills, Managing Teams
Objective/s : To give a basic understanding of all Topics
Learning Outcomes: This approach words best as an introductory training solution to business concepts and/or skills that were previously unfamiliar. The employee has an overall increase in general business knowledge around the training topics.
Pros: Cheap, suitable for new starters. Cons: There is little or no behavioural changes, or in other words it makes no difference to how the employee carries out their day to day duties. Very little ROIs
A Short- Term Targeted Training Programme
Examples: Appointment Setting, Coaching Under-performers
Objective/s: To up skill the employee around specific areas
Learning Outcomes: Significant increase of knowledge and skills in a few defined business concepts and/or skills around a particular business topic.
Pros: Behavioural changes around specific activities. ROI. Cons: This approach is only effective where there is already a developed understanding of the general business topic and the employee can already demonstrate sufficient general skills.
Longer-Term Targeted Training Programme
Example: Six month sales programme including all sales modules, coaching sessions and evaluations.
Objective/s: To up skill the employee in all areas of skills shortages starting with priority areas and working though.
Learning Outcomes: Increase of knowledge and skills in all areas
Pros: Significant behavioural changes, highly skilled teams, more efficiency, less management time and resource required. ROIs. Cons: Requires time, people and money investment.
