Some of the Reasons why Corporate Training Fails
Published by Niall Devitt, Btb Business Training
I’m often asked for the reason or reasons behind why corporate training so often fails so here goes:
Because the Trainer:
- Was rubbish
- Pocessed no understanding of the client’s business
- Was not prepared or did not spend time on-site getting to know the client’s business
- Refused, was afraid or unable to offer the correct training solution
- Was unable to create a learning environment for the participants
- Talked too much
- Used power point
- Was unable to encourage, deal with or use real constructive criticism and feedback
Because the Training Provider:
- Offered “out of the box” training courses to solve behaviour led problems
- Out of the box training dressed up as bespoke
- Motivation type courses been offered to solve a skills shortage
- Flavour of the month/year courses
Because the Need Analysis/Training Objectives consisted of:
- No needs analysis
- Incorrect needs analysis
- Not enough time spend on needs analysis
- No real training objectives
- Too many or unrealistic training objectives
- No defined ROIs
- Unrealistic ROIs
Because the Client
- Failed or refused to recognise the real problem/issues
- Would not accept management been the actual problem
- Did not take the training experience seriously
- Could not or would not trust the trainer
- Wanted the trainer to offer a solution before the needs analysis was carried out
- Was not prepared to make correct levels of investment in terms of monies and time
Because the Training Course:
- Matched participants expectations
- Started badly
- Was power point dependent
- Was content heavy
- Too dependence on course notes
- Did not have enough breaks
- Had poor/rigid/constant seating arrangements
- Contained no opportunities for participants to learn from one another
- Included management been in the training space
- Was too structured or too unstructured
- Did not include enough mentoring and coaching
- Contained no proper evaluation and follow ups.
If you can think of more let me know.

Too many trainers use a stock approach to solving problems that require varied thought and circumstances oriented approaches

Agreed,
If the trainer doesn’t invest in understanding a business, then it’s impossible to train for that business. Lots of training fails because it’s set up to fail. Unfortunately, It’s often as SIMPLE AS.
Thanks for your comment.
