Hi Barney, I take your point and it's well made.

As regards participation, I would say this however, the obvious definition of participation is comments/postings but for me at least, this only tells half the story. There are some groups that I am member where I don't or rarely comment but at the same time that doesn't mean I aint listening to much of what is going on. Some of the group managers in my opinion are too narrow in their definition of what participation is. In Ireland in particular, there are a great number of people who are a member of online groups but predominately in a "lurker" type fashion. This is true of blogs and all social media.

Hi Niall. Really comprehensive listing - thanks. Only problem with being a member of lots of groups is sorting the wood from the trees in relation to which actually give value. This is the only note of caution I would have with joining lots of groups - make sure they are relevant to you and your business and that you will have time to participate fully.

You may want to add to this list, a great group entitled Mise Éire (I am Ireland). It is a varied group of Irish and Irish diaspora. The topics of discussion include politics of all kinds, ancestry, history, music, recipes, humor... and there's even a virtual pub that's just shoy of having 15,000 posts in just the past four months! A great bunch, and great craic!
