Fear creates inertia, sometimes it can be paralysing. Right now in Ireland fear is pervasive throughout our entire social stratus. Everyone is talking about LACK, being without, and so the mindset is affected. Decision making is effected.
You may have taken away the risk in terms of facts & figures, but it is the "emotional fear" that is in charge of making the decisions.

Thanks Michael,

I think it’s fear of making a decision itself. Ultimately I am asking someone to change their outlook and perhaps to change their mindset, to perceive opportunity. I think my own weakness is in not realising that just because this is natural to me, it is not the same for everyone. I work with people black and white, numbers, logic, rational ways of thinking. Fear is very often irrational, so this approach may not always work.

Regards,
Niall

Very interesting and thought provoking article Niall. But what are they afraid of, especially if you have taken away the risk? What's left to fear? Without knowing that surely there's not a chance of addressing it.

Hi Deidre,

Thanks for your comments. I am delighted that you found it interesting. I believe that there is a genuine fear of making decisions, even good decisions - the recession has more or less paralysed some managers etc, they are so afraid of making a bad decision, it is safer to make no decision.

Regards,
Niall

Hi Niall,
A very thought-provoking article and sooooo true!

I would have said it was inertia ... however you have hit the nail on the head ... it's fear!

I too will modify my offerings to take into account this factor - thanks for the tip.
